Saturday May 2nd 2015 South Denver Beer Fest
Can’t thank Mike and Dan from Beer Craving enough for having us for the 3rd consecutive year at the South Denver Beer Fest at Clement Park in Littleton. Over 80 breweries and 200 beers to choose from, this festival really has it all with live music, food, spirits and other great vendors come together to really kick off the beer festival season. This year Nate Fleming from High Plains Tap House sat in with me. Ha a little technical difficulties to start but we got rolling with our first interview with Jeff Mendel who is a partner at Left Hand Brewing as well as sits on the board for the Forward Steps Foundation. They are putting together a fundraiser for theior program which raises money that will support former foster youth enrolled at Community College of Denver get degrees. It will be at Amato’s Ale House on Thursday May 28th from 5:30 to 9:00 and you can get tickets here. We then talked to Tebo about their new IPA, Summerbright Ale, the new digs and much more. We fit in as many guests as we could after that and talked to Lone Tree Brewing‘s Bridgette Geiger, Locavore Beer Work‘s Andy Nelson, Sanitas’ Drew Owens, Peak to Peak Tap Room‘s Gordon McKennon, 38 State Brewing‘s Mike Keating, Breck Brew‘s Todd Usry and Destihl Brewing‘s Aaron Chadwick. Also in hour two was some Brew News You Can Use! We had a blast at this festival and really nudge you to make sure you are there next year!

It had to eventually happen… The man, the myth, the legend Mike Nelson (Beer Despondent Number 2) co hosted with Turk today in studio. And he did a stellar job too. We led off the show with Will Carlson from Beerporium who has some unfortunate news as he has been diagnosed with an incurable blood cancer called Multiple Myeloma. Some breweries and the Knights of Columbus have teamed together for a fundraiser being called Tasters for Life which will take place on Saturday May 16th from 1-7 pm at the Knights of Columbus at 1555 Grant St. Please take some time to stop by on this date and support a guy who has done a ton for the Colorado Craft Beer Community. We then got our weekly update from Todd Thibault from Breckenridge Brewery. In hour two we had in Goldspot Brewing Company‘s Matt Hughes (head brewer) and Ryan Abernathy (Tap Room Manager) and Jesse Brookstein from Call to Arms Brewing Company. Had fun sampling Goldspot’s stuff and talking about their brewery at 4970 Lowell Blvd near Regis University. Jesse and Call to Arms plan to open later this summer at 46th and Tennyson in the Sunnyside neighborhood. Jesse comes from Avery Brewing and their is a lot of anticipation for these guys to open. And of course a nice dose of Brew News You Can Use!

Argonaut Wine & Liquor‘s Daniel Ekker filled in for Turk who was in Portland for the CBC. This was a big show with a ton going on. The awesome Marty Jones was Daniel’s co host. Marty has been the brain behind some of the best marketing ideas for breweries in the state including Oskar Blues, Great Divide and the Wynkoop. Guests in hour one were Taylor Rees, Austin Wiley and Darren Boyd who just opened up Spangalang Brewery at 27th and Welton in an old DMV building. These guys all came from Great Divide so you know they will come out with great beers right out of the gate! In Hour two Ron Vaughn from Argonaut Wine & Liquor jumped in to talk about the ever-important Keep Colorado Local Campaign which is fighting the full strength beer in grocery stores initiative. This is a very important issue for your local breweries so please take a look at what they are saying. Wayne Anderson from Spirit Hound Distillers in Longmont also jumped in to talk about his spirits and their stance on the Keep Colorado Local Campaign. Of course we talked to Tebo from Breckenridge Brewery and did Brew News You Can Use as well.

Turk and Nate Fleming from High Plains Tap House hosted the show today in studio. In Hour one we caught up with Chris Phelps (Co-Owner / Brewer) and Dave Barron (Co-Owner / Sales) from Saint Patrick’s Brewing Company. These guys specialize in crafting lagers and have made over 80 different kinds including traditional, experimental and reinventing ales as lagered beers. They just opened their new taproom and brewery at Littleton Blvd and Santa Fe! We also caught up with our man Todd Thibault from Breckenridge Brewery. In hour two Andrew Curtis joined the fun. He is the metro sales rep for Pug Ryan’s Brewing Company in Dillon. They’ve been brewing traditional ales and lagers in Dillon since 1997. Head brewer Dave Simmons makes some amazing lagers including a dunkel, helles and pilsner. A recent expansion has them hitting it hard lately. 8-23-2014 Great Central City Beer Fest
Boulder Beer’s Chicken Dan and Turk made beer radio magic from one of the coolest beer fests in the state! The Great Central City Beer Festival. This was year three of the event and it keeps getting bigger and better. Over 25 breweries on hand in historic Central City. There’s a lot more than just beer too. Great food, a cemetary crawl, historic gun battle re enactments, and much more. Want to thank the Central City Business Admin for having us out again! Guests included Joe Behm of the Central City Business Admin, Marty Jones, Arvada Beer Co‘s Cary Floyd, Dillon Dam Brewery head brewer Mike Bennett, Breckenridge Brewery‘s Todd Thibault, Barrels & Bottles Brewery’s Abby George, Dave Thomas from Dostal Alley Brewing and former Central City Mayor Buddy Schmaltz.
8-30-2014 Freshcraft 4th Anniversary
Jason, Aaron and Lucas Forgy kind enough to invite Turk and Nicol Winkler (AKA the Thirsty German) out for Freshcraft‘s 4th Anniversary Party! They were breaking out some crazy rare beers for this all while serving up some BBQ Iowa style. Freshcraft is a place where you can not only find a stellar lineup of brews with rare ones popping their head up all the time but a place that is well known for their amazing cuisine. They do beer dinners quarterly that will drop your jaw. Or try a beer cocktail! Lunch specials and happy hour deals galore. We LOVE Freshcraft. Jamie Gulick joined us for a few segments talking about Freshcraft, their food, women in beer, and the new concept the Forgy’s are working on in the Highlands called Block and Larder. Tebo jumped on talking Breckenridge Brewery and Fall beers and events! Arlo Grammatica from Ska breifly joined us to talk new releases and their 19th anniversary party. Wade Norris jumped on to talk about Green Beer Fest and his run for state office. Nicol, Turk and Adam Lenfest also discussed the use of the word “Denver” in a brewery’s name. Denver Beer Co and Denver Pearl Brewing are having a little battle. Thanks to our host Jamie, the Forgy’s and everyone at Freshcraft for the great time!
9-6-2014 Studio with Renegade’s Laura Vande Zande with guests from Living the Dream and Kokopelli
Renegade Brewing‘s Laura Vande Zande joined Turk to co host the show in studio today. She’s putting on a big show called Offensively Delicious during GABF week that mixes comedy and beer. They will have national and local comedians plus some rookie brewery workers taking their shot at stand up. In hour one we talked with Jason Bell the brewmaster at Living the Dream Brewing which just opened in Highlands Ranch at Santa Fe and Highlands Ranch Parkway. Him and his partners are living the dream while making great beers! We also chatted with Tebo from Breckenridge Brewery. He’s been on a wild Mountain Tour! In Hour two the Kokopelli Beer Company gang jumped in! We had founder and owner Christine Wares and Katie Schroepfer in studio. Also want to thank Danica Smith for bringing Kokopelli Beer all the way down from Westminster! They have a really cool story and make some really great and diverse beers! Felt good to be back at our home away form home Arvada Beer Company as Cary and Kelly Floyd sat in the whole show with Turk! In hour one we talked about GABF events and happenings, new beers at Arvada Beer, their 3rd anniversary party coming up October 25th which we will broadcast from and a lot more. Tebo also jumped in and almost seemed to be in a jolly spirit even though GABF is about to fall on top of him! In hour two Marty Jones came on to talk about his new venture the Brew Night Show which should take place once every two months at Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret. It’s a variety show with music, comedy and beer banter. He will also feature some very cool guests including Charlie Papazian who will be at the premier during GABF on Wednesday. Information is HERE! In Hour One we led off with Mobile Canning‘s Brew News You Can Use! We then were joined by Falling Rock employees Paul Vismara and Bryan Jansing who are working on a book project that will be a history and guide to the Italian craft beer scene. They took a trip there in late January and brought some beers back which we shared and discussed the vibrant and evolving movement. They will be going back to Italy again here in a few months to do some more research. They aso need your help and have launched a Kickstarter program to raise some funds to write the book. Check their blog and get involved in their Kickstarted program HERE. We also jumped on the line with Tebo from Breckenridge Brewery who was at Southwest Arbor Fest in Grand Junction. He talked about some new beer release dates and about their Caped Brewsader beer made in conjunction with the folks from Comic Con. We also threw out several of our sponsors’ events and brew news.
In Hour Two we chatted with Jason Conger and Calvin Cook from 53 Peaks Brewing. They have been brewing together for several years and are planning on a brewery in Conifer. 53 Peaks cranked up a Kickstarter campaign in an effort to raise $20,000 to get the brewery going. Get involved HERE. They make some interesting brews including a Cherrywood Porter which we tried in studio. We also talked to Marty about a beer the Wynkoop is brewing for the Cheeky Monk. Marty also hit on some new brews they plan to start canning. We also talked to Becky Creighton from Culinary Connectors. We broadcasted live from Arvada Beer Company! The Gubna was in Brevard North Carolina checking out the new Oskar Blues brewery and doing Thanksgiving with his family!
Turk was joined by Cary and Kelly Floyd who co hosted along with Breckenridge Brewery’s Todd Thibault. We talked a lot about breweries and their ties to communities and charities as well as about consolidation amongst breweries. Their was a recent Washington Monthly piece and a Mother Jones piece that dealt with this. We also threw out a ton of Colorado craft beer news throughout the show.
Our guests this time around were Wynkoop Brewing‘s Marty Jones and Rickoli’s Brewery‘s Rick Abitbol. Marty talked about December 1st’s Parade of Darks held at the Wynkoop and about some new beers they have rolled out. Rick from Rickoli’s Brewery talked about his sof opening at 44th and Wadsworth on November 28th and about the beers he has crafted!

In Hour One we led off with a little scene set from the 31st annual GABF! We were then joined by General Manager at the Publican in Chicago Katie Syracopoulos. We also talked with Adam Trattler from Backcountry Brewery in Frisco. We then were joined by a very overworked Todd Thibault from Breckenridge Brewery. He gave us the lowdown on what it’s like to be involved in dozens of events and having to get beer practically everywhere during GABF week. We closed out the hour with John Winter from Lone Tree Brewing Company!
In Hour Two folks started pouring out of the awards ceremony. We announced some of those winners and Andrew Emerton from New Belgium Brewing jumped on. They won two medals! Brewers Association Craft Beer Program Director Julia Herz also joined us to talk about some of the medal winners and about 31 years of GABF! Strange Brewing Company co owner Tim Myers also joined us right after learning they had won a Bronze for their Dr. Strangelove Barleywine! Next up was Andy Brown and Marty Jones from the Wynkoop to talk about their Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout. Our next guests were Brad Lincoln and Gordon Schuck from Funkwerks who grabbed gold medals with their Belgian Style Strong and their Saison. But that was just the beginning, as they also received the Small Brewery of the Year Award! Upslope also won a silver medal in the American Style Brown category and head brewer Alex Violette joined us. We closed out the show with Ska President Dave Thibodeau who was a skunked as far as medals and was a little sour! We love him dearly though!
Very cool show with Marty Jones from Wynkoop Brewing and Nick Nunns from TRVE Brewing. Marty filled us in on a busy year for Wynkoop Brewing. He also played some fitting tunes for the beer show. He of course also leads Marty Jones and the Great Unknowns. Nick talked about his new brewery opening up at 227 Broadway in mid-April.
