Colorado Craft Brew News You Can Use 4-14-2012
Published April 14, 2012 | By beershow
Based on results from a recently-completed industry survey, the Brewers Association reports record exports of American craft beer in 2011, and for the ninth consecutive year. American craft breweries exported over 110,000 barrels of beer in 2011, valued at an estimated $23.4 million—a dramatic increase of 86 percent by volume and 97 percent by dollars over 2010 exports. In theU.S., small and independent brewers employ nearly 100,000 full- and part-time employees, generate more than $3 billion in wages and benefits, and pay more than $2.3 billion in business, personal and consumption taxes.

Fort Collinsbreweries hooked up for a collaboration beer forColoradoCraft Beer Week (May 12-19). C.B. & Potts, Coopersmith’s, Crooked Stave, Equinox, Fort Collins Brewery, Funkwerks, New Belgium, Odell Brewing, and Pateros Creek all came together at Fort Collins Brewery for the brewing. Each brewery will celebrate the collaboration during American Craft Beer Week which runs May 14-20, 2012. According to David Young at the Coloradoan: The local and state liquor boards raised questions about the legality of last year’s Collusion Ale and this year’s brew. Mark Couch, spokesman for the Colorado Department of Revenue, said Patrick Maroney with the Colorado Department of Revenue Liquor Enforcement Division read an article in the Coloradoan about the collaborative brew, sparking an investigation into the brewing process. Couch said in an email that this year’s brew is being handled legally. Under Colorado Beer Code, brewers are permitted to brew a beer together, but if they want to sell that beer in their respective breweries, they must pay the brewer where it was made for the beer they sell.

From the Telegraph UK: In findings that will be toasted by pub quiz aficionados, researchers found drinkers got more test questions right and were quicker in delivering the right answers. Psychologists at theUniversityofIllinoisset 40 healthy young men a series of brain teasers. They involved being given three words, such as coin, quick and spoon, and coming up with a fourth word that links the three – in this case, silver. Half the group drank the equivalent of two pints of beer before doing the tests, while the rest carried them out sober. The drinking group solved nearly 40 per cent more problems than the others, and took an average of 12 seconds compared to the 15.5 seconds needed by sober subjects.

Mississippibeer drinkers are breathing a sigh of relief this morning. After a long battle in the State legislature spanning years, Governor, Phil Bryant, signed a beer bill into law this week that will increase the ABW cap on beer from 5% to 8%. The change goes into effect on July 1st. The initiative is one of many for a local beer organization, Raise Your Pints. With this win, they can focus their efforts in future legislative sessions on other pressing initiatives— like a bill to legalize homebrewing (or raise the ABW cap even more).MississippiandAlabamaare the only two states in theUnionthat outlaw homebrewing. With this news, get ready for a possible land rush of craft brewers into the state.
